Kenilworth Castle

One of the first attraction to see when you visit Kenilworth is the Kenilworth Castle. The castle was originally built by William the Conqueror and then rebuilt by King John of England. It is now a popular tourist attraction with its beautiful gardens and historical buildings.

Kenilworth Castle is a medieval castle in Kenilworth, which was built in the 12th century. It has been the home to many important figures throughout history; including Queen Elizabeth I, Robert Dudley, and 24th United States Secretary of War John C. Calhoun.

The castle is a Grade I listed building. The castle defences are mostly intact, but the interior of the castle is a ruin. It was captured for the first time in 1266 during the Second Barons’ War, and defended by Simon de Montfort against Henry III’s forces that besieged it from 6–8 September. The siege was successful, and as a result Henry agreed to grant the town its royal charter.

The castle saw military use during the English Civil War when it was besieged by Parliamentary forces under Sir William Waller in 1644. After being captured following a protracted siege, it underwent extensive reconstruction work before being abandoned due to concerns about its structural integrity. It is now a popular tourist attraction.

Kenilworth Aquadrome
